HP LaserJet 1536dnf MFP can't install software via CD or downloaded drivers from website

I just purchased this MFP to replace my 9 year old 3015 MFP and i'm unable to install the software from the CD provided.  I downloaded the driver software required from the HP website after reviewing the support forum and still get the same issue - gets to 99% than X-error took to long:( 

Running XP Pro 2002 sp3 with a USB connection

I've followed all the suggestions from the website but still no luck.
