Laserjet P1505n Reinstallation Issue

Disabled school teacher friend of mine bought and installed a Laserjet P1505n on his Dell work PC because he needed it and they wouldn't provide him with one.

Last week internal Tech Support came in and tried to upgrade the OS on the computer, and like an idiot failed to disconnect the printer (which was attached via USB cable) or even turn it off before attemping said upgrade.

The OS upgrade ended up to be a complete FUBAR and the tech had to get a replacement hard drive for the computer. This replacement hard drive OS is Windows XP (I know I know, but it's a public school and they're slower than molasses upgrading). Try as she might, the tech was unable to get the printer to reinstall and she also attempted to do a network install. The Tech also convienently lost the install CD for the printer.

Now I come into the picture and of course the lack of install CD isn't a big deal. I download the full printer driver package from the HP Support site.  Start the install, but as soon as you plug the USB cable in you get an error from the OS saying the device is unrecognizable.

I've tried resetting the printer by pulling the power cord while it's running.  I've tried multiple USB cords and multiple USB ports in the computer. The Device Manager doesn't show any problem with any of the USB ports UNTIL you plug the printer in. Nothing has made any difference. For all intents and purposes the OS acts like the printer is now some kind of alien object it has no desire to interface with at all.

So tell me oh please tell me oh wise ones ... did this idiot tech just fry the board in the printer when she tried to upgrade the OS without unplugging the blasted thing or something?  Is there anything else I can try to get this printer going again? Help please!
